6 things to do for some quality me-time in Singapore
When was the last time you had some time to yourself? In the hustle and bustle of fast-paced modern life, being able to soak up some much needed me-time is a real challenge. It is why meditation apps like Headspace have become so popular in the last few years and probably a part of the reason why growing succulents is all the rage! These days we all know it’s important to look after our mental health and that taking some time to escape the noise is a good way to do that. But how exactly are you going to plan your escape to bliss?
It’s time to recharge, revitalise and refocus by spending some time hanging out with you and just you. We’ve picked out 6 things you can do right here in Singapore to put a smile on your face and a bounce in your step. Don’t be surprised if you even experience some childlike wonder in the process!
1. Pick a hiking trail and get going
We have some truly beautiful hiking trails right on our doorstep. If you haven’t taken advantage of them yet, now is the time. Getting back to mother nature is one of the best ways to reenergise if you’re feeling a bit stale. People talk about superfoods and miracle supplements, but the humble act of walking in nature is going to come out on top every time for us. Hiking is great for your mind, body and spirit and, to top it off, it’s completely free! Our favourite walks are Macritchie Reservoir Park, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Southern Ridges.
2. Go stargazing and feel awestruck
Since the dawn of mankind, we have looked up to the stars in wonder, but when was the last time you did? If anything, we look down now more than up, what with our phones constantly buzzing and dinging for our attention! Put that noise machine on silent mode and take a trip to the Science Centre Singapore Observatory for a guided astronomy session. The neat thing about Singapore’s observatory is that because we’re so close to the equator we have a greater view of the sky than other places in the world, taking in constellations in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Singapore literally has a front row seat to the heavens!
3. Embrace the zen with outdoor yoga
If you didn’t already guess that yoga was going to be in this list, then you really do need some me-time and fast! Yoga is for catching those zen vibes, which is exactly what me-time is all about. There are so many health benefits to doing yoga that we wouldn’t be able to list them all here. From building muscle strength to draining your lymph glands and preventing cartilage breakdown, yoga is wonderful for keeping your body in shape, but it also makes you happier. Not only do you get a serotonin boost but the slow, focused movements and breathing techniques practiced in yoga help you relax and focus on the present, making it the perfect me-time activity.
4. Release your inner Van Gogh
Does all this talk of spending time alone with just you and your brain for company freak you out a bit? Don’t worry, that’s normal given that many of us are so used to being constantly busy and surrounded by other people. If you rarely get any time to yourself, it might be a bit of a challenge to get used to the concept at first. So why not start by just dipping a toe in the me-time pool and take an art class? At Art Jam, you can sip on gourmet tea while throwing yourself into painting. Don’t worry about being good or bad, this is all about freeing your artistic expression. However, there is guidance at hand if you decide you want to tweak your skills.
5. Have a doggy day out!
Is it still strictly me-time when you have a dog for a date? We don’t know, but we don’t really care either because…well, dogs! Let a dog free in a dog park and you’ll see just how good at me-time they are, running around, taking time to smell the roses (and just the grass in general). Bishan Park Dog Run is a great spot to let your pupper or doggo loose while you drink up the happy canine atmosphere, because they really are the happiest creatures once they’re in their element. If taking a solo hike is not your jam, then this is a perfect alternative without compromising too much on the inherent aloneness of me-time.
6. Visit the S.E.A Aquarium or Gardens by the Bay
Most likely you’ve been to these two iconic attractions with a group of friends or family members, but going on your own is just as special an experience. With me-time being at the very tip top of the agenda, you can spend as long as you like sitting on a bench in the S.E.A Aquarium watching over 100,000 aquatic animals serenely glide over your head. Or you could wander though the flower dome at Gardens by the Bay, where it is perpetually Spring with all flowers in bloom. These activities may be oldies as far as Singaporeans are concerned, but, more to the point, they are goodies!
