Managing Skin in Singapore’s Weather: A Comprehensive Guide

Singapore’s tropical climate is a blend of high humidity, intense heat, and frequent rain showers. While this weather can be lovely for outdoor activities, it poses a unique challenge for maintaining healthy and clear skin. If you’ve ever wondered why your skincare routine isn’t yielding results you want, the climate might be a factor. Here’s how you can manage your skin effectively in Singapore’s weather.
1. Prioritize Sun Protection
Singapore’s proximity to the equator means the sun’s rays are strong all year round! Daily sun protection is non-negotiable. Even on cloudy days, harmful UV rays can penetrate the skin, leading to premature aging, dark spots, and an increased risk of skin cancer.
- Use at least SPF 30, and reapply every two hours, especially if you’re outdoors
- Consider a lightweight, non-greasy formula to prevent clogged pores, which are more common in humid climates
- Wear protective clothing such as hats and sunglasses or masks, to shield your skin from direct sunlight.
Most sunscreens in the West tend to accommodate for the colder and drier seasons by formulating thicker consistencies so that it lasts longer. It’s important to find a sunscreen formulated for Asian skin!
2. Stay Hydrated
The high humidity levels in Singapore can cause your skin to sweat more, which might lead to dehydration. Additionally, air conditioning is used to combat Singapore’s hot and humid weather—tends to dry out our skin as well!
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated
- Incorporate hydrating serums and moisturizers that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which helps retain moisture in the skin
- Opt for a lightweight, gel-based moisturizer that won’t feel heavy or greasy in the humid weather
- Look into hydrating facial treatments – Try out EstheClinic’s AquaPure Intense for the ultimate hydrating facial that also purifies and cleanses at the same time!
3. Combat Humidity-Induced Breakouts
The high humidity in Singapore can cause your skin to produce more oil, leading to breakouts. Efforts to cover up the breakouts with make-up can cause even more breakouts, since they do tend to clog the pores as well!
- Double cleanse if you wear makeup. Start with an oil-based cleanser, followed by a water-based cleanser.
- Use oil-free, non-comedogenic products that won’t clog your pores
- Control sebum production by looking into pore reduction treatments! EstheClinic provides chemical peels and IPL Photorejuvenation – non-invasive, painless treatments with no downtimes that helps with reducing pore size, and regulating sebum production!
- Exfoliate at least once a week using a mild exfoliant. Look for products with ingredients like salicylic acid or glycolic acid that help clear pores without being too harsh!
4. Colder Weathers
While Singapore’s weather is generally consistent, we do tend to experience a drop in temperatures towards the end of the year! Strong winds and heavy rains are expected. Despite the gloomy weather, you still want to adhere to your skincare routine!
- You should still wear at least SPF 30 even if there isn’t any visible sun
- Use hydrating products still to prevent your skin from producing even more oil
